3 – Identification, Identification, Identification!

This one is a no-brainer but one that many pet owners still overlook simply because they have never lost a pet – yet.  Pet tags, pet licenses, rolled up owner info attached to a collar…. there are a multitude of identification methods and some of them are even rather jazzy looking.  Make sure the tag is waterproof! One very effective tool is to register your owner information in a publicly accessible online information bank that is traceable from the id number on your pet’s tag. 

You can also register your pet at the SPCA or other community animal rescue group.   

When an official animal rescue organization finds your pet, they could treat him or her in any number of ways since they are not bound by any common laws. 

Especially if your doggie is a closet Houdini, registering his identification, picture, etc will improve your chances of being informed immediately and minimize your chances of having your sweet pup adopted out to someone else - or put down.
