Like people, dogs have personality traits that influence their behaviour, and render them more or less likely to willingly bolt from your side, your home, your yard, dog park, etc.  But they have an additional influence to process – breed-specific longings.  One of the best examples is the hound’s single-minded pull to follow potential prey, oblivious to anything else, his powerful stride easily landing him lost and alone.  That could mean having to navigate dangerous traffic trying to find his way home, or suffering from disorientation that could prevent him from knowing where home is leaving him vulnerable to extreme elements. 

Just as importantly, today’s house pet still carries around their animal instincts for survival but may be over or under confident in using them given:

- lack of experience, particularly when older;
- lack of exposure outside city living;
- diminished capacity to protect himself or obtain what he would need to survive in the wild, due to breeding and socialization. 

This is not the case with all pets of course, many of whom truly need time and space outside on their own and whose instinctive navigational skills may be well honed, but forewarned is forearmed. 

A few creative tests in a safe environment can allow for insightful observations into how Fido would react, and a little research into your dog’s breed-specific longings will give you valuable insight into how to avoid the triggers and to minimize the impact when it does occur.

Cat owners may choose to attach a small bell or another type of noise making device in order to make them easier to locate and to make small animals or birds aware of a predator’s presence. Cats have generally retained more hunting instincts than domesticated dogs, so accepting that when the owner is away the cat will definitely play is a given.

Of course un-neutered dogs or cats will always be much more prone to slipping away and require more focused handling to ensure their safety.
