1 - Be Seen and Be Safe!

The single largest danger to any lost urban animal is their vulnerability to drivers who do not see them.  And all bets are off when the sun goes down!  If your dog or cat came near a dangerous bear, it would instinctively know how to avoid it or how not to engage it.  A 2 ton hunk of metal however is a whole other matter.  Many animals panic in the face of an oncoming vehicle because their instinct does not recognize such a beast in nature and the ensuing fear can cause them to actually run toward it or pull a “deer in the headlights” reaction.  Any way you look at it, it is not a fair fight.  

If your precious pup or kitty does find herself in harm’s way, the best way to reduce this risk is to keep her as visible as possible.  If drivers see her, they can try to avoid her.  Use lighted and reflective collars, leashes, harnesses, clothing….anything that you like that will reflect a flash of light back from the animal.   There is a wider variety of pet safety gear than ever before, both for dogs and cats.  (Cat collars should always sport an elastic or breakaway safety clasp!)  LED’s are a good choice, but make sure they are the high intensity ones that can be seen up to 300 meters.  Reflective strips are very effective when found in the path of headlights, but less effective at night since they require light to provide reflective glow.  A combination of the two is ideal, but any safety gear is better than none.  In daytime, some reflective wear with micro prisms can be quite effective as well, and even fun pet fashion wear has a small element of safety when it is noticeable.  Be safe and be seen!
